History of Los Alamitos
In 1896, William Clark, an ex-senator from Montana bought 20 acres of square miles of what was once Rancho Los Alamitos. His intent was to raise sugar beets and make sugar. The Los Alamitos Sugar Company became the center of this new town, providing work and housing for over 400 people. This town had all the amenities of frontier living; bars, a pool hall, and even ladies of virtue. The town had such a look of the old west that a silent western "Bond of Blood" was filmed here in 1919, because at the time it there was no better Hollywood set that the real Los Alamitos.
In the mid 1920's there was a pest infestation and the sugarbeet business went bust. Then the armed forces came into the area in During World War II and build a 1,300 acre Armed forces reserve, which gave the community the economic boost it needed. Since then the location has been used by all the armed forces and the California National Guard.
