The Griffin is a legendary creature with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle. As the lion was traditionally considered the king of the beasts and the eagle the king of the birds, the griffin was thought to be an especially powerful and majestic creature. In antiquity it was a symbol of divine power and a guardian of the divine.

The white statue is made of cast zinc, stands thirty-four inches tall, and is bolted to a two foot tall concrete pedestal. A brass plate affixed to the bottom reads, "Mott N.Y.", apparently indicating the name of the manufacturer.
