Text on marker: "Wak-Em-Up-Portage - The Wak-Em-Up-Portage Trail connects Lake Vermilion and the little fork river and is a centuries-old line in the route between Lake Superior and Rainy River. The portage is named for the Indian Village which once stood at its eastern end on Lake Vermillion. The first white settlers to arrive in 1900 carried their belongings over this same trail. St. Louis County Historical Society - 1981"
