This three story structure, located at 3323 Church St., Alexander, NY., is reputed to be the largest cobblestone school ever built and is now the only 3-story cobblestone town hall in America. Constructed in 1837 by Hezekiah Barnard with funding from the Literary Society of the Alexandrian Library, it served as a school for 101 yrs (1837-1938). It is currently the Alexander Town Hall.
It was constructed with multicolored field cobbles at 3 courses per quoin, and using limestone(painted) for quoins, lintels and sills, and watertable. The mortar displays very prominent horizontal V joints and vertical pyramid joints. The structure is topped with a wooden ballustrade surrounding a domed octagonal cupola that originally housed the school's bell. The foundation is also field cobblestone but at 1 course per "quoin" with the quoins being squared blocks of limestone.
