The Olowalu Petroglyphs are easily accessible on the Island of Maui though the casual tourist will likely miss it as there is little in the way of signs. The date and origins of these drawings are still mysteries. More in the photo gallery.

DIRECTIONS: On highway 30, south of Lahaina at mile marker 15, look for the Olowalu General story, and the expensive Chez Paul restraunt on the mauka side. As you face these buildings, drive around to the left of the store past an old water tower. There is a parking area here, and as the road leads toward the mountains, there is a sign for the Olowalu Petroglyphs indicating that they are on private property, though access to the public is genarally granted. This road is in poor condition so either park and walk, or drive very skillfully unles you have an off-road vehicle. The petroglyphs are about a mile up the road on the right. There is a trail that extends from here into the beautiful Olowalu Valley. There used to be a viewing platform here, but fire and neglect have left only a few remnants and an iron railing. One can get too close to these interesting drawings, and unfortunately there has been some defacement here.

There is some new development nearby, and there may be access to a point very near this site on a small paved road which starts south of the General store, but I did not explore this.

The petroglyphs are thought to be over 300 years old, depicting scenes of common life, but little is known of the people who lived here then.
