The tower was originally built in 1922 as a fire tower used to spot forest fires. By the 1960's more modern methods of fire detection phased out the tower. It was taken down and a new tower was built on the site with the intention of becoming a radar station. Those plans were scrapped at the new tower was opened to the public in 1967 as a tourist attraction.
