Henry G. (Harry) Maxted, a Western Springs resident, died during fighting in WWI. He is memorialized on a small stone column near the historic Water Tower.

Henry was born in Canada in 1885 and moved to Western Springs in 1888. He worked his way through college then later worked in Boston for the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. He joined the National Guard and was sent to France with the 104th Infantry Regiment in 1917. He was KIA at on April 12, 1918.
Henry Maxted is buried at the World War I St. Mihiel American Cemetery and Memorial located at Thiaucourt-Regnieville, France. This cemetery contains the graves of 4,153 American dead from the Great War, most of whom were killed during the St.Mihiel offensive.
