There has probably been a churchyard on this site since 1259 when the Church was dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The burial ground bears witness to the fact that many natives of the parish went to live in nearby Devonport and even further afield to seek their fortunes. The tombstones record that many wished their remains to return to the peaceful parish of their birth.
