Rudyard Kipling was an English poet and writer of short stories. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in literature in 1907 [1].

Kipling is famous for his poetry of the Empire, in which he frequently takes the part of the common soldier. His most famous poems are probably "If -", "Gunga Din", "The Ballad of East and West", "Tommy", "Boots", "Mandalay" (and others). He also wrote the novel "Kim", and for children the "Just So" stories, and two collections of "The Jungle Book" stories, famously adapted into a cartoon movie by Disney.

The building, or the series of buildings on the site, has an interesting history (see image of plaque), having been the birthplace of Francis Bacon in 1561 and home to Samuel Pepys in 1701.

The plaque reads:
Rudyard Kipling 1865-1936 poet and story writer lived here 1889-1891
