[EN] Before the Roman occupation, it was an important gallic oppidum of the Bellovaque people. This oppidum probably played and important role in the defense of the Bellovaques in the battle against Julius Caesar, not far from Clermont et Catenoy. During the conquest the Romans set up a military camp here similar to those at Bratuspantium, Vendeuil, Caply and Caesaromagus. The site is a calcareous butte reaching a height of 137 meters above the valley of the Thérain river where it flows 50 meters above sea level. A major portion at the top is an almost completely flat surface area. However, buttes appear at the north-east corner and one must especially point out that towards the west appears a slight elevation which was probably man-made at the time of the Gauls. The north-east portion is entirely forested, the southern part is almost entirely open and the slopes over time have been cultivated up to the point where the ground becomes too disturbed by the gallic fortifications.

Furthermore, the presence of several species of wild orchids has significantly contributed to the reputation of the site. The flora also include 5 other species benefiting from legal protection. With the support and collaboration of the community of Bailleul-sur-Thérain, the Conservatory of Picardy Natural Sites is responsible for the management of the site.
