Burt County, established in 1855 is one of the oldest counties in Nebraska. The county seat, Tekamha, was incorporated in the same year. A log building was used as courthouse from 1857 until 1867. It was replaced by a larger wood building which serve as courthouse until a tax levy permitted construction of the the present stone building to begin in 1916. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.
