Route 89 Overpass - Savannah, New York - Active Rail Locations on Waymarking.com

The Savannah, New York highway overpass is an excellent and safe location to stop and view the passing trains, as there is plenty of parking space at either end of the overpass and even parking on the overpass on either side. There is a sidewalk on one side as well. There are three sets of tracks here that are used by both CSX Railroad and AmTrak too. On several occasions when I have stopped here with my kids to watch, you usually only have to wait 5 or 10 minutes for a decent sized train to come along. We have counted well over 100 cars on the cargo trains on several occasions. According to AmTrak information, this is the main rail used to move passengers from New York City to Chicago, Illinois. Like almost every small town along the rail lines, Savannah used to have a railroad depot for passengers as well as cargo coming in and going out, but those days seem to be a thing of the past for most of the towns and villages in the Central New York area. In several of the small towns in this area, the depot still exists but has been converted to either a museum or town offices.
