Located near the center of the UC Berkeley campus, Gilman Hall was designed by John Galen Howard and built in 1916-1917 to accommodate the College of Chemistry. It was in this room on February 23, 1941 that Glenn Seaborg and his colleagues first detected plutonium, an element instrumental in ending WWII. During the war this building was a top-security facility because of weapons research conducted here.
Room 307 is listed as a Registered National Historic Landmark, and Gilman Hall is a National Historic Chemical Landmark.
One can visit the doorway of the room, but access is undoubtedly restricted.
