Many small towns in rural areas have seen their schools closed. It's not uncommon in the Midwest to find a school bell preserved.

Plymouth, Nebraska, population 438, has mounted their bell on a fine monument for the school, which operated from 1917 until 1966. There's a picture of the school building on a polished granite slab and the cornerstone of the building is mounted on a front corner of the bell pedestal.
