Morecambe’s seafront is over 5 miles/8 km in length and during the last two decades the original sea walls and promenades have been battered and breached by severe storms. New sea defences were needed. Lancaster City Council realised that here was a glorious opportunity not only to protect the resort, but also to improve and enhance the environment by linking an original and exciting programme of public art to this huge civil engineering programme.

A search began for a theme around which the project could evolve. What could be more appropriate than the bird life of Morecambe Bay? The TERN project commenced in 1994 with development around the new Morrisons store. Funding for the first phase was from Morrisons, Lancaster City Council and Government derelict land grant.

There are more than 14 works of art along the promenade now, and Lakeland Panorama is one of them. It is very large and you can walk between the various parts. Many place names are shown, especially those with bird connections. It is cut in steel and is located at the former Central Pier entrance. It is fairly accurate although some artistic licence has been taken with the exact outlines. On a clear day the thousands of visitors who walk along the prom will certainly have a better understanding of what they can see.
