A large perched boulder on the impressively rocky shore of northern Brittany. The softer material in which the granite formed has been eroded away leaving this rock sitting on top of the main stack.

The coast along the northern side of Brittany is famous for its amazing rock scenery arising from various areas of granite. Along with the granite 'tors' there are associated beaches with fine white sand. It's a great place for a holiday.

Kerbrat is a small village north of Cléder, a few miles west of the port of Roscoff. It has a variety of campsites and other accommodation. Rougenic campsite overlooks the beautiful crescent beach near these rocks.

Other rocks are nearby, including one that looks like one of Disney's 7 Dwarfs. A tidal island is just off the beach, connected at low tide, with further rocky prominences.

Granite is an igneous rock, formed from magma rising in the crust, then slowly cooling. It occurs in either vertical or horizontal intrusions (dikes and sills) or in massive 'blobs' (batholiths) which can be hundreds or thousands of square miles in area. Granitic magmas are generated at convergent plate boundaries where the oceanic lithosphere is subducted.

The rocks in Brittany are part of the "Variscan" belt of strata which extends across Europe from the edge of the Carpathian mountains in northern Bohemia, eastwards through Germany and Belgium, beneath the younger rocks of East Anglia and Wessex, and on into South-West England. The same belt passes southwards from Cornwall into Brittany, then via the Massif Central, into northern Spain. This belt is the product of a period of violent earth movement that occurred some 300 million years before the present, when two continental masses were in collision along an extensive common boundary.
