Upon the death of Joseph Smith, Jr., Joseph Smith III was to be the next leader of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, but at 11 years old, he was too young to assume a leadership role.
Those loyal to Joseph Smith, Jr. and his wishes moved to Plano, IL while the remainder of the followers were led by Brigham Young westward. Because of the split, the congregation in Plano renamed themselves the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
This church was the first church of this new congregation and remains so today under the retitled name of Commmunity of Christ Church.
