Near the docks of Barrow stands this remnant of the industrial past. Preserved when a new Morrisons supermarket was developed on the site.

Barrow was just a small fishing village until the potential for ship building was seen. Close sources of rich iron ore were the raw material for the iron and steel needed for the ships. The channel between Walney and the main land was sheltered, although the tides have always been a challenge.
The place quickly grew into a large town with thousands of people working in Vickers Engineering and other associated companies. Much, but not all, of the heavy engineering has gone. Nuclear submarines and other things are still made here. A lot of new shopping and leisure areas have been developed where the factories and works stood. One remnant can be seen at the large Morrisons store built on the Strand next to Buccleuch Dock. The store opened in 2003.
Alongside the road is a three arch structure made of brick and sandstone. This was one of the entrances into the works by Buccleuch Dock. The bricks show the passage of time in their pitted, eroded surfaces. Work has been done to maintain the structural integrity of the arches and preserve them as a monument to the past.
