Since 1983 when it was acquired by the City of Los Angeles with a grant from the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy, it has been managed by the City of Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation as an 'Urban Wilderness.' It is a rare example of wild chaparral with its drought-resistant evergreen trees and shrubs only a stone's throw from the hustle and bustle of the Hollywood community.
“Welcome to Hell “ was once the message written on the pink concrete wall behind the tennis court at this crumbling, 148-acre estate. Built by singer John McCormack, and called "The Pines", it was later owned by A&P heir Huntington Hartford, and then leased by actor Errol Flynn. In the 1960s, the abandoned estate was home to madman Charles Manson and his “family.” Today all that is left of the mansion are a few brick foundations.
Some neighbors say the splendid old mansion reappears on some summer nights, accompanied by the sounds of a lavish party and multicolored lights on the second floor.
In 1983, psychic investigators at the site were confronted by a malevolent voice that told them to “GET OUT!”

My GPSr was a little whacky in this canyon.
