In 1822, the Village of Allaire was founded and became a booming iron goods town, until discovery of a better grade of iron in Pennsylvania caused the economic ruin of the entire village.
Not only was it the center of worship, but also acted as a meeting place for the village and the school. James Allaire did not require his employees to attend church, as he believed in freedom of religion. It was, however, a requirement that all children of the village attend the school. So strong was his belief in free public education, Allaire supposedly paid for the education of the children out of his pockets (profits of the iron bog). This really helped establish the first free schools in northeast America. The minister acted as schoolmaster as well and was paid $500 a year...wow.
The clock still operates, and the Chapel is one of the most requested wedding spots in New Jersey!
