The first Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race in 1984 featured a motley crew of characters venturing to the relative unknown on a “trail” that had never been raced. The 2007 Quest saw Lance Mackey go faster than the several hundred before him to win for the third straight time.
The years in between have produced countless adventures and misadventures, from Charlie Boulding’s five-minute margin of victory in 1991 to Jeff Mann’s killing of a moose in 1993 to the helicopter rescues on Eagle Summit in 2006.
In commemoration of the Quest’s 25th running, what follows are year-by-year capsules that we hope glimpse the flavor of an event that has captured the imagination of people in the North and fulfilled many a dream for its mushers.
