The Lyth Valley is a very flat area, in stark contrast to the hills of the Lake District in the background. It is only a few metres above sea level and used to spend most winters under water. A drainage scheme now keeps it clear except in the wettest times.
Either side of the Lyth Valley rise limestone hills, Whitbarrow Scar and Scout Scar. The small village of Brigsteer nestles on the edge of the plain under Scout Scar. At the top is the quiet and remote Helsington Church.
Parking by the church gives one an excellent vista across the Lyth Valley to both the hills of the Lakes and the estuary of Morecambe Bay at Arnside.
At the parking area are three panels forming a topograph, which details what can be seen on a clear day. The area is a very pleasant, open grassy hillside with sheep roaming. It is owned by the National Trust. Several walks can be started from the church.
