Kendal was a major coaching town in the time of coach and horses travel. Before leaving the relative safety of the England and heading north over Shap, travellers would overnight in one of the many coaching inns. The horses would be changed and a stronger team used to get the carriage to the steep Shap summit. Today their journey is still a wild one over Shap using the motorway M6 or A6.
The main road through Kendal is the A6. Previously the major way north on this side of the country.
