NAS Cecil Field was a Navy base from 1941 to 1999, when it was decommissioned. After closing, the land was turned over to the city of Jacksonville, and it has been converted into the Cecil Commerce Center, with a public airport, office space, a branch of a local college, and some housing.
As could be expected, fifty-eight years of flying planes and other activities generated a lot of potentially hazardous contaminants. The site was listed as a Super Fund site in 1989, and is still in the cleanup stages now. Contaminated media on the site include soil, groundwater, debris, sediment, surface soil, and surface water. Specific contaminants include arsenic, lead, benzene, acetone, cyanide, and a long list of other chemicals.
