The Southern Railway was an important feature in the economic development of Southside Virginia. The area’s two main economic resource, tobacco and textile were centered on the Southern Railway’s ability to ship these resources throughout the country. The Southern Railway Freight Station handled so much freight that it was separated from the nearby passenger station. Today the old freight station is the home of a very active Danville Community Market, where venders for though out Southside Virginia and North Central North Carolina come to sell everything from fresh homegrown produce, jams, jelly’s and preserves to handmade furniture and crafts.The Southern Railway Freight Station is located at:
