St. David Lewis was hanged, drawn and quartered near this spot in 1679, for High Treason, having been condemned as a Roman Catholic priest and for saying Roman Catholic Masses.

This was during the reign of Charles II, and his execution was connected with the so-called "Popish Plot" a Catholic conspiracy against the Crown that did not exist, other than as the invention of a conspiracy. Such were the convolutions of power and religion at the time.

In 1970 Pope Paul VI canonized a group, including David Lewis, known as the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales
