The Roman circus, measuring 450 meters long and 110 meters wide, was built in the middle of the 2nd century AD outside the Roman city.
20,000 people could be seated here to watch the chariot races. The spina , or wall in the center of the oval track around which the chariots raced, was decorated with sculptures and the beautifully-proportioned obelisque which the Arlesians transported to the Place Royale (today's Place de la République) in 1676 to be placed in front of the City Hall.
During an archeological dig in 1974, the South-West end of the monument was discovered. Beside these remains the Arles Archeological Museum was built in 1989.
