They were built in 1862 where the original 1828 lighthouses were. The Medieval-style towers offer some awesome views of the whole area. Decommissioned in 1949 the structure is now the home to a very interesting museum with great exhibits and artifacts. In 1841, it was equipped with the first Fresnel lens in the New World, and in 1883 it became the initial first-order lighthouse to use mineral oil(kerosene)for fuel until 1898, when it became one of the first electrically lit lighthouses in the country. In 1899 the first wireless messages (radio) were sent and received.
