George Washington Birthplace National Monument preserves the heart of the Washingtons' lands in America. John Washington, the immigrant, arrived in Westmoreland County in 1657, and settled near Bridges Creek. Generations of Washingtons lived on these lands and established a legacy of public service, leadership, and love of the land. The rich legacy of the Washingtons would culminate with George Washington's achievements as the "Father of Our Country."
The home in which George Washington was born, burned in 1779. Excavated in 1936, the foundation was recovered to preserve it. Crushed oyster shells on the ground mark the location of the home and the size and shape of the foundation.
Even though no one knows what the buildings actually looked like on the site when George Washington lived there, several buildings have been constructed to give you the feel of what it would have been like to live here in the 1700.
The Washington burial grounds are also located at the park. George Washington parent, grand-parents and great grand parents are buried here.
Open 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily year round. Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years Days. Visitation highest in Summer. School group visits highest from mid-April to early-June.
