The Little Theatre opened it's doors October 18, 1929 with a three-man orchestra providing accompaniment for the silent film "Cyrano de Bergerac". It's first talking film, "Outward Bound" previewed on April 15, 1931. Shortly after that, The Little began showing foreign language films. Although popular in larger cities, this was rare in smaller communities. The first foreign film shown was a German language film "Two Hearts in Waltz Time". In 1949 the theatre was chosen to premiere Olivier's "Hamlet". The Little was selected for this honor based on "it's consistent policy of showing unusual motion pictures and it's record for maintaining long runs of such films". The theatre went through some rough years and by 1977 the Little was best known as it's status of a survivor, the last theatre in downtown Rochester. The theatre was purchased in 1982 by William Coppard and John and Pam Blanpied, hoping to restore the theatre to it's former glory. They added two more screens, giving them flexibilitly in programming special events and festivals. In 1989, Willaim Coppard bought out the Blanpied's interest and continued to make changes. In 1994 expanded again, adding 2 more screens and a cafe.
