[FR] Posée sur un socle de 3 mètres de large, une statue en bronze du pape défunt Jean-Paul II est encadrée d'une arche, elle-même surmontée d'une croix.
Une inscription figure sur le socle : "N'ayez pas peur".
L'ensemble forme un monument de 7 mètres de hauteur.
L'artiste est le sculpteur, peintre, architecte et designer russe Zurab Tsereteli.
Le monument, en béton et granite, devait au départ être placé dans le parc de la maison mère des frères de Lamenais, ouvert au public dans la journée. Mais le refus des religieux a décidé le maire à installer la statue au centre d’une place elle-même rebaptisée Jean-Paul II.
Le monument a surtout fait parler de lui (il suffit de faire quelques recherches sur Google) en raison de son financement et de son caractère religieux. En effet, la loi française de 1905 (articles 2 et 28), relative à la séparation de l'Eglise et de l'Etat, interdit les financements publics de signes et monuments religieux.
Le financement de l'oeuvre par la municipalité a eu pour effet d'irriter les défenseurs de la laïcité et les contribuables de Ploërmel.
Le discours officiel est que cette statue rend hommage avant tout à l'Homme d'Etat, "Géant" de l'histoire du 20e siècle. Pour le reste, chacun est libre d'interpréter.

Posed on a 3 meter wide base, a bronze statue of the late pope Jean-Paul II is framed by an arch, itself surmounted by a cross.
An inscription on the base says: “Do not be afraid”.
The entire unit forms a 7 meter height monument.
The artist is the sculptor, painter, architect and Russian designer Zurab Tsereteli.
The monument, made of concrete and granite, had at the beginning being placed in the park of the head office of the Brothers of Lamenais, opened with the public in the course of the day. But the refusal of the monks caused the mayor to decide to install the statue in the center of a location re-named Jean-Paul II.
The monument makes news because of its financing and its religious nature. Indeed, the French law of 1905 (articles 2 and 28), relating to the separation of the Church and the State, prohibited public financings of religious signs and monuments.
The financing of work by the municipality irritated the defenders of secularity and the taxpayers of Ploërmel.
The official view is that this statue pays homage above all to the Statesman, “the Giant” of 20th century history. For the remainder, each one is free to interpret.
