The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame was formed in 1983, but didn't have a home to showcase it's inductees. After a competition between several cities, Cleveland was chosen as the place to build the museum. It was partially due to the fact that rock & roll was created in the city, with DJ Alan Freed coining the term and holding the first concert in 1952. The museum was designed by famous architect I.M. Pei and opened in September 1995.

The first six floors of the building feature some permanent and some temporary exhibits. The uppermost floor at the top of the pyramid houses the names of the actual inductees and some info about them.
