The following excerpt is from the American guide book "The WPA Guide to Illinois":
The GRANT MEMORIAL HOUSE, above the park on Bouthillier St., was presented to the General by the city on his return from the war. This sturdy two-story house of red brick has some of the earmarks of the Victorian period in its wide bracketed eaves and heavy porch, but somehow escapes being clumsy. It stands on a height overlooking the valley in an expanse of broad lawn. Maintained by the State as a permanent memorial, it is furnished with authentic Grant heirlooms, including the dishes and silver service used in the White House during Grant's administration.
The state of Illinois continues to manage the Grant Home. In 1955 the home underwent an extensive restoration, returning it to its 1868 appearance. It is still operated as a museum.
