The city spent $300 in the spring of 1919 to build a road up the gulch, and was assisted by the Forest Service in planting trees in the area. The trail meanders up Young Gulch and then Prarie Gulch, crossing the stream some 33 times in the first 4 miles. the climb is very gradual and scenic, ponderosa pine and douglas fir dominating the hillsides. After 4 miles there is an open meadow on the left side of the stream, this makes a good turnaround point, but if you continue another mile you reach the overlook on Stove Prarie Road. Poison Ivy is considerable along the trail and stream bed...so use caution.
