The Penn Dixie Paleontological Center is on the site of a former quarry that was once the source of calcareous shale used for cement aggregate used by the Penn Dixie Cement Company. In the 1960s, 9-10 feet of shale were removed, revealing 380 million year old Devonian era fossils preserved in the Windom shale.

Several different types of fossils can be found in various places of the site. In the northeast corner of the site where I searched, a small stream contains many brachiopods and corals. It's best if you walk in the creek bed down the hill for a little bit.

After paying the admission fee of $6/adult ($5/children), you are allowed to carry out as many fossils as you want. A staff member is always on-site to help identify any fossils you dug up, or answer any questions.
