The Sixth Avenue underpass was built in 1930 to carry the Southern Pacific Railroad over one of the main routes into downtown. It was put on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.

The Sixth Avenue underpass has seen better days but still has very busy rail traffic. The bridge is in constant danger of being replaced but so far history has won out over better traffic flow. The city buses go through constantly with very little room on each side.
To the north are historic districts and the University of Arizona and to the south are downtown and more historic districts in some of Tucson's oldest neighborhoods.
