In 1833 a man by the name of Samuel Greenwood established a trading post here, and it was from him that the town gets its name.
Shreveport had the fight for its life and won by the ”skin of its teeth” when an election was held between Greenwood and Shreveport in 1855 to decide which place should be the parish site, and our great city won by only 1 vote majority.
Although Shreveport had been named the parish seat, it was not to retain this distinction without a struggle. Greenwood competed with Shreveport for the location, and when the votes were counted, Shreveport had won by only one vote.
