New Hamburg, PA was once a promising stop for barges on the Erie Extension Canal in the mid 1800's. Great plans were in the making for town expansion. There are maps of these plans, showing many blocks of streets that would have really put it on the map. Those who dreamed big for the town did not count on nationwide railroad expansion which would put New Hamburg and the canal out of business! As a result, the new streets were never put through and some streets that were there were closed. The business district composed of shops, hotels and club buildings literally was left to rot. Now only their foundations remain in the woods on state game lands. Today the town is composed of a few houses and no businesses at all. This old truss bridge with wood flooring over Lawango Creek used to be on Broadway, a street that crossed the Shenango River on a stone bridge. Now, that stone bridge is gone and Broadway is grown over to a narrow path, circumnavigated by a new bridge and road across the river. Just down Broadway in the woods is the north head of the Shenango Trail, a wonderful hiking opportunity.
