The Graue Mill was opened by German immigrant Frederick Graue in 1852. The basement of the mill was used to hide escaping slaves on their trip to freedom. The mill, now the only operating waterwheel gristmill in Illinois, is operated as a museum. Included in the museum exhibits are displays of showing the role that the mill played in the Underground Railroad.
