This is the third in a series of murals in Santa Fe that I've labeled, 'the Barrio Murals", and it is the only one with an identifiable title.

This mural entitled, as near as I can see, "Las Tres Culturas del Mestezos" shows the three cultures that have combined to create the mestezos (a term not much used now) of New Mexico - the Native, the Spanish and the Mexican. On the far right is a pueblo, modeled after the Taos Pueblo, with dance taking place out front. The scene on the left of the mural shows the bringing of La Conquestdora (the name given to the first statue of the Virgin Mary brought into a newly conquered area by the Spanish) to Santa Fe sometime before 1626. The statue still resides in the Cathedral there. (My attempt to get it Waymaked as a "First" fell by the Wayside, but the picture is around somewhere along with my other failed offerings. Much like Cain I seem to have a knack for making the wrong oblations - - but that is another story for another day. ) The middle of the painting is held down by a three faced "Janus" atop the Mexican Eagle, the three faces being a Spanish conquistador, a Pueblo and, in the center, a modern Hispanic. I found it interesting to note the similarity between the Mexican Eagle grasping the snake and the eagle in Barrio Mural #2 that is breaking a chain. There is a section of text located at the bottom right hand corner that seems to say that the mural was done in 1986. However (True Confessions time) the text and the background upon which it is painted are in the exact colors that I am color blind to - so I could not make it out. However I have included a picture of it, photoshoped to bring out as much text as is possible and I urge any and all to have a go at it.
