Acclaimed as one of the great beauties of her day, she is probably best-remembered for her performance in the title role of Laura (1944) and her Academy Award-nominated performance for Best Actress in Leave Her to Heaven (1945). Other notable films include, Rings on Her Fingers (1942), Heaven Can Wait (1943), Dragonwyck (1946), The Razor's Edge (1946), The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (1947), Whirlpool (1949), Night and the City (1950), The Mating Season (1951), Close to my Heart (1951) and The Left Hand of God (1955). She has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
