'North Staffordshire pub once run by darts legend Phil Taylor set to reopen'
"The pub was boarded up during the lockdown in 2020
A pub once owned by darts legend Phil 'The Power' Taylor is set to be reopened by a mum and daughter team. Stella and Kerrie Mellor are to reopen The Cricketers Arms, in May Bank, at the end of the month.
The pub was boarded up during the lockdown in 2020 but has now been bought by new landlady Stella who moved from the West Midlands to Stoke-on-Trent to be closer to her daughter.
The boozer is currently undergoing a major refurbishment which will see works being carried out to create an open plan space inside as well as a rear lounge with a wine bar and a newly-spruced up beer garden.
Mum-of-two Kerrie, aged 48, who currently works at Newcastle working men’s club, says the Cricketers Arms used to be her local - and now she is looking forward to running it with her mum.
She said: “My mother is nearly 70 and she wanted to move here to be closer to me and buy a pub. It was a really good pub years ago, it was lovely.
“We’ve had people come up and tell us their parent’s were dating here. It’s a lovely family feeling pub and everybody knows about it. There’s five generations of us here, all helping out. We are really hoping we can make it a success.
“Hours of work is going into this, it’s years of savings that has gone into making this happen and we are hopeful to bring back the pool table, darts and sports teams. It’s going to be warm, friendly and welcoming so hopefully we will give people a reason to come here and create a home from home vibe.
“It’s an almighty risk but I think we have got our heads together and are keeping it as cheap as we can for people. The cost of living is worrying for us but people always find the money for a couple of pints.”
