The old town of Calatayud is divided into three districts: a Catholic, a Muslim and a Jewish part. You can often tell which area you are in by the street signs, which feature a cross, a crescent moon or a Jewish star. The city was protected by a number of castles connected by a wall. There are still ruins left of this huge complex, which are well worth a visit - especially because of the great view of the city and the surrounding area. Nowadays, the old town consists of a few interesting (church) buildings and many ruined houses. A strange mixture that didn't really inspire us. But - especially on the opposite side of the river - there is also a more respectable and lively Calatayud, which also wants to be discovered ...

Calatayud is a town and a municipality (municipio) with a total of 19,776 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2022) in the province of Zaragoza in the autonomous region of Aragon in north-eastern Spain. The historic old town has been recognized as a cultural asset (Bien de Interés Cultural) in the category Conjunto histórico-artístico[2]; it is also a stop on the Camino del Cid. Calatayud is one of the few urban centers in the generally sparsely populated Serranía Celtibérica.
