CCC Company 1743 was first organized on April 15, 1933, as Company 694 at Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis, the unit was initially sent to Pierre, S.D. where it was re-designated as Company 1743. The company was comprised entirely of African-Americans and was assigned to Washington State Park beginning June 4, 1934. Their camp was named Camp Thunderbird after the mythical creature depicted in the local petroglyphs. During their time at Washington State Park they did extensive roadwork and constructed fourteen buildings including this octagonal lookout shelter.
