Hutchinson City Hall is on the south side of East Avenue B, across the street from George W. Pyle Park. The entrance is on the east side of the complex. There is a fine sculpture of eagles in flight near that entrance.
In 1871 frontiersman Clinton Hutchinson contracted with the Santa Fe Railroad to create a town at the railway crossing at the Arkansas River. The town actually sprang up about a half-mile north, where houses had already been constructed. By 1878 Hutchinson had erected the state's first water mill. The town became known as "Temperance City" due to its strict stand on alcohol consumption. In 1887 local salt deposits were discovered and Hutchinson became known as "Salt City" due to the success of salt mining here. The mine was once featured on the television show "Dirty Jobs." Hutchinson has held County Fairs since 1873, which were so large and successful that many referred to them as the Kansas State Fair. There was actually no such thing until 1913, when Hutchinson gifted their fairgrounds to the State, and the "official" Kansas State Fair has been held here ever since. And in keeping with the town's series of nicknames, every year Hutchinson is officially known as "Smallville" for one hour, in honor of Superman's fictitious home town in Kansas and in support of the Smallville Comic Con that is held on the fairgrounds each year in June.
