Colonel Philip Moore’s two-storey log home was built for his 1907 marriage to Pearl Brewster. His house grew along with his family, with additions at the rear of the building.
Philip Moore (1879-1951) was originally from the United States. After graduating from Princeton Military College in 1902, he came to Banff, first to experience the mountains and then to work. By 1905, he was a partner in the horse-packing business with the two Brewster brothers, Jim and Bill. In January 1907, he married their only sister, Pearl Brewster. Construction on this log house began in the spring of 1907. The new couple were able to move in by June 1907--just days before the arrival of Moore's mother.
Over the years, the Moores collected many items in their home, relating to their travels, their relations with the Stoney First Nation, and Philip's experiences in World War I and World War II. .
In 1971, the home was moved from its original site to the current location, on the grounds of the Whyte Museum, and the house and contents are now part of the museum's collections. Tours of the house are available through the museum.
