"Iconoclasm
On August 10, 1566, the fire hit the pan. In Steenvoorde, a village in South Flanders that nowadays belongs to France, a Protestant refugee named Sebastiaan Matte preached on that day. He had just returned from England and things heated up during his hedge sermon. After the sermon, about 20 of the audience broke into a nearby monastery and smashed religious statues to smithereens.

In the weeks that followed, hundreds of churches and other Catholic shrines were visited by Protestants. Statues were destroyed, but many valuable objects also disappeared due to looting. Particularly in the Southern Netherlands, much destruction was caused. The event came to be known as the Iconoclasm."
