The Fort Trumbull Cannon was acquired by the Clapp family from Fort Trumbull and displayed it at their home in Milford. They donated it to the Town of Milford when they moved out-of-state in 1988.

The cannon was restored by the high school students of Platt Technical School. During the restoration they found a foundry mark with the date 1882. It is believed that the cannon was installed along with five other cannons at a battery at Fort Trumbull in New London where it guarded the approach to Long Island Sound.

A large elm tree once stood at the site of the cannon. The wood from the tree was used to make the carriage for the cannon.

The cannon was last fired in 1976 in celebration of the bicentennial of the United States. A plaque in front of the cannon has an image of Fort Trumbull and the inscription:

FORT TRUMBULL CANNON
GUARDIAN OF MILFORD HARBOR
COURTESY OF THE CLAPP FAMILY

RESTORATION COMMITTEE:

MARK LOFTHOUSE, PETER SPALTHOFF, RONALD GAUL,
THE STUDENTS & FACULTY OF PLATT TECHNICAL HIGH SCHOOL
MILFORD PUBLIC WORKS, WAYNE'S AUTO BODY, AND MOORE'S SAWMILL
