Jose Antonio Menchaca was born in San Antonio while it was under Spanish rule. He grew up in the time when Mexico claimed rule over Texas territory. As a young man, he became a sergeant in the Mexican army prior to Texas declaring independence from Mexico. During the Texas Revolution, Menchaca was promoted to Captain of a cavalry unit. His contribution to Texas independence gained Menchaca several land grants.

During his time in San Antonio during the Republic of Texas, he not only worked his land owning, he also became active in San Antonio politics, serving in several city government position. He also helped fellow veterans from the Texas Revolution petition the city and Republic of Texas to get proper pensions and payments due them from the government agencies.

Look for a tall gray granite marker with a metal laurel and star mounted over the inscription on the face of the stone.
