"Le bâtiment était le siège de l'ordre religieux de la commanderie de Villedieu, fondée au début du 12e siècle par l'ordre des Hospitaliers de Saint-Jean-de-Jérusalem, qui devient Ordre de Malte à partir du 16e siècle. Elle subsiste jusqu'à la Révolution. Le bâtiment est alors vendu comme bien national. Il en subsiste la chapelle Saint-Blaise.

Elle trouve son origine, selon Guillaume de Jumiège, dans le don d'un domaine de 12 hectares fait par Henri Ier Beauclerc (1068-1135) à l'Ordre de Saint-Jean de Jérusalem, en récompense des services rendus par les hospitaliers aux Croisés lors de la première croisade.

Ensuite, les dates divergent sur la date de la fondation de la commanderie. On la donne en 1130 à Villedieu-lès-Saultchevreuil. Pour Édouard Le Héricher, c'est en 1170 qu'une abbaye « connue sous le nom de Saint-Hôpital », est d'abord fondée qui cesse d'être habitée lorsque ses revenus sont abandonnés à un commandeur.

« Villedieu est la plus ancienne commanderie française de l'ordre hospitalier de Saint-Jean-de-Jérusalem », explique Philippe Clairay, docteur en histoire et directeur des musées municipaux de Villedieu.

Elle est située « dans une presqu'île dont un canal, nommé le Lieu, a fait une île qui s'appelle l'Île Bilheust ».

Un hôpital est fondé, vite complété par une église, la chapelle Saint-Blaise, le moulin banal et les fours banaux.

En 1313, après la dissolution de l'ordre des Templiers par Philippe Le Bel, la direction de la commanderie templière de Valcanville échoit au commandeur de Viledieu.

La commanderie tire ses recettes notamment des droits qu'elle perçoit des marchés de Villedieu et de Saultchevreuil, privilège confirmé par le roi Henri II (1519-1559).

En 1499, elle passe sous la tutelle de la commanderie de Villedieu-les-Bailleul (Orne) : elle perd son commandeur attitré.

En 1530, l'Ordre de Malte se substitue aux frères de Saint-Jean de Jérusalem.

La commanderie subsiste jusqu'à la Révolution.

Tous les quatre ans, la fête du Grand sacre donne lieu à une messe dans le parc de la Commanderie."
